Brief Introduction of Hankou University

     汉口学院是一所经教育部批准的多学科、综合性的普通本科学校，由湖北省负责管理。学校创办于2000年，始称华中师范大学汉口分校，是全国最早成立的四所独立学院之一。2011年经湖北省人民政府申报，国家教育部批准更名为汉口学院，也是全国首批独立学院转设为普通本科高校的17所学校之一。学校有中级职称评审权，学校连续五年排位全国独立学院十多名。代码为11800。

学校取名为“汉口”，是因为2000年申报学校校址在汉口，2003年学校最终选址在江夏。汉口曾是中国的直辖市，是武汉市的旧称，是近代中国商业、金融、物流的发祥地，学校取名“汉口”，有为地方经济和城市发展培养人才的理念。

【校园环境】学校坐落在武汉市南部风景秀丽的汤逊湖畔，校园占地905亩，建筑面积28万平方米。校园环境优雅大气，教学区、行政区、生活区、运动区、休闲区功能齐备，布局合理，品味高雅，氛围和谐。大气稳重的建筑设计，赏心悦目的园林风格，充分体现丰厚的文化底蕴。校内绿树成荫，四季花开，廊亭水榭、假山雕塑点缀其中，令人心旷神怡，是读书治学的理想园地。

【学科建设】 学校建有电子信息与通信工程学院、电气工程与自动化学院、信息科学与技术学院、经济学院、管理学院、外国语学院、文学院、旅游学院、法学院、艺术设计学院、音乐学院、继续教育学院、国际学院、思政课部、数学课部、体育课部等十三院三部，坚持“结构合理、重点突出、特色鲜明，优势互补”的学科建设思路，形成了涵盖工学、经济学、管理学、文学、法学、教育学等6大学科门类21个本科专业、15 个专科专业。学校《大学计算机基础》被评为湖北省精品课程，“电子信息工程专业”被列为省级重点培育本科专业。学校现有各类在校学生二万余人，其中全日制普通本专科学生一万余人，国家自学考试学生近万人，国际班学生近六十人。

【教育教学】 学校坚持把培养专业基础知识牢固、能力突出、具有创新精神和实践能力的高素质应用型本科人才作为人才培养的基本定位,构建通识教育、专业教育和特色教育三级课程体系。学校实行弹性学制和学分制教学管理制度，促进学生自主学习、全面发展。学校严格实行教学督导制度，聘请了20多位教授、专家常年进行教学督导工作，检查老师的教案和授课情况，帮助学校提高教学质量。2010年和2011年分别接受湖北省本科教学工作水平评估和全国高等学校设置评议委员会专家组考核评议，均获得很好的评价。 近5年来，学校学生在大学生电子设计竞赛、“挑战杯”发明竞赛、数学建模竞赛、大学生英语、艺术竞赛等全国全省各类重大竞赛中，共有1700余人次获奖，2010年参加“数学建模竞赛”获两个国家二等奖，取得全省同类院校第一名的好成绩。参加湖北省“挑战杯”大学生课外学术科技作品竞赛、湖北省大学生艺术节获“优秀组织奖”，创同类院校优异成绩。学校还积极鼓励学生再深造，近五年来，有600多人考取全国重点大学研究生，曾有一寝室四女生全部考取研究生被媒体誉为“考研四朵金花”。学校坚持设立奖、助学金，2010年资助奖励学生二千余人次，资助奖励金额三百余万元。

【师资力量】 学校通过引进、培养、使用等多种形式，建立一支学术水平较高，职称、学历、年龄结构合理的专任教师队伍。现有专任教师600余人，其中具有副高及以上专业技术职称者250余人，占专任教师的38.5%，具有研究生学历者350余人，占专任教师的53.6%；有3位教师享受国务院特殊津贴， 2名院士为学校客座教授。五年来，学校教师出版学术专著和高校教材98部，完成涵盖理、工、文、管等多个学科门类的科研项目32项，获得省、市级以上各种奖项150多项。

【办学条件】 学校已有教学仪器设备总值5000余万元，建有专业实验室73个，其中BVCOM视频通讯教学研究基地、嵌入式系统、国际结算、数字音频采编等重点实验室32个，可开设实验项目1750多个，实验开出率95%以上。学校建有教学视听、语音实验室10个，座位数724个；有先进的电脑2000多台，能与国内外著名大学分享教育资源；建有多媒体教室56间，座位数10290个；多功能的音乐楼有琴房148间，钢琴115台，图书馆建筑面积2.68万平方米，馆藏图书110.36万册，电子图书5200GB，各种期刊1500多种；学生固定实习基地70个，学生实习实践情况良好。

【对外交流】 学校积极开展对外合作与交流，先后与美国纽约大学、德国柏林工业大学、韩国青云大学、美国伊利诺州大学芝加哥分校、法国凡尔赛国立音乐学院、英国伯明翰大学等10余所国外高校建立友好校际联系，进行学术交流，并通过展开“2+2”、“2+3”等全方位多层次的合作，联合培养本硕学生。学校常年聘请外国专家、学者来校讲学和任教，建立了由学校资助的教师赴国外合作学校访问、进修或进行学术交流的机制，促进学校人才培养质量和教师学术水平的提高。

【校园文化】 学校注重大学生综合素质教育，每年举办大学生文化节、科技节、体育节和艺术节，注重发挥社会实践和“第二课堂”的育人功能，积极开展丰富多彩的校园文化活动，满足学生提高综合素质的要求，涌现出“全国十佳社团联合会”、“全国百强社团”等一批杰出的校园文化活动团体，学校“旭日合唱团”一举摘取第七届意大利日瓦国际合唱节最高奖项特别奖和两项金奖，成为第一个获此殊荣的中国合唱团。学校先后被中国教育家联合会、新华社《中国名牌》杂志等单位评为“全国十佳独立学院”、“中国十大名牌独立学院”，荣获“全国爱国主义教育成就勋章”等荣誉，是全省同类院校中唯一党建试点单位，全国团建试点单位。

学校建设和发展得到了各级党政领导的高度重视和关心。国务院总理温家宝、中共中央政治局委员俞正声、中共湖北省省委书记李鸿忠、中共湖北省省委统战部部长苏晓云、湖北省人民政府常务副省长李宪生、湖北省人民政府副省长郭生练等对学校建设和发展均给予过帮助，各级政府部门领导也多次到学校视察、指导工作。

Founded with the ratification of Chinese Ministry of Education and under the guidance of Education Office of Hubei Province, Hankou University provides full-time undergraduate education as a normalized, multidisciplinary and comprehensive regular institution of higher education. Hankou University, set up in 2000 and formerly named Hankou Branch of Huazhong Normal University, is one of the four oldest independent institutions. By the application of provincial government and the confirmation of the Ministry of National Education, Hankou University gets its new name in 2011, which is one of the first 17 that have been transformed into institutions of higher learning. Capable of assessing intermediate academic title for teachers, it ranks in the first teens in the national independent institutions for five consecutive years .The university's code is 11800.

The reason why the university is named after Hankou comes from its initial location in Hankou where it was established. The university finally located itself in Jiangxia district of Wuhan city in 2003. Hankou, the old name of Wuhan, has once been a Chinese municipality and the cradle of modern business, finance and logistics. Entitled Hankou, Hankou University intends to cultivate talents for the development of city and regional economy.

Campus environment: The university lies beside the beautiful Tangxun Lake, south of Wuhan city, and covers an area of about 905 mu with a construction area of more than 280,000 square meters. The campus, an ideal place for study and scientific research, together with fully functioned teaching area, administrative area, living quarters, sports centre as well as recreational area, reveals grace and grandeur with its well-planned layout, tasteful style and harmonious atmosphere. Cultural deposit shows itself through imposing and impressive architectural designs and garden art styles pleasing to both the eyes and the mind. In campus, trees make pleasant shade and flowers blossom at all seasons. There are refreshing corridors and waterside pavilions on campus, among which rockeries and sculptures are dotted.

Disciplinary development: There are 13 schools and 3 fundamental course departments in the university, including School of Management, School of Foreign Language, School of Chinese Language and Literature, School of Information Science and Technology, School of Electronic and Information Engineering, School of Economics, School of Art, School of Law, School of Music, School of Electrical Engineering and Automation, School of Tourism, School of Continuing Education, School of International Education, Department of Political Thoughts and Theories, Department of Mathematics, and Department of Physical Education. It contains 6 disciplines (management, literature, technology, economics, law and education, etc.), 21 undergraduate course specialty and 15 junior college majors. Fundamental of Computers is chosen as provincially exquisite course, and Electronic Information Engineering is classified as a provincially intensive undergraduate course specialty to be cultivated. Hankou University adheres to the four patterns of thinking rational construction, highlighted points, distinguishing features and complementary advantages for developing concepts. The university registers more than ten thousand full-time undergraduate and college students, with nearly ten thousand self-study examination students and around 60 students from international class, totaling above 20 thousand students.  

Teaching and education: The university is oriented on training the high quality talents of application types, making them outstanding in specialty, capable of practice, full of creative spirits. Thus, three-stages of courses system general education, professional education and feature education have been structured. To promote autonomic learning and integrated development of students, the university adopts the policy of flexible educational and management system. Throughout the year, by strictly following the system of instructional supervision, over 20 professors and experts have been invited to supervise the teaching and examine the teaching plans and instructions to help improve teaching quality. In 2010 and 2011, the university has won favorable comments from expert groups of provincially teaching evaluation for undergraduate education and of review board for institutions of higher learning. In the past five years, the students have participated in various major contests, like national undergraduate electronic contest, the invention competition of Challenge Cup, mathematical contest in modeling, NECCS and art competition, of which 1700 students have been awarded. The students have won double the second prize of state for mathematical contest in modeling, ranking the first among independent institutions of Hubei province. The university won the prize of organization for extracurricular scientific works contest and provincially college art festival. Furthermore, the university encourages students to pursue advanced studies in a positive way. Within the recent five years, more than 600 students passed the entrance examination for postgraduate students by key universities. There were four students from one dorm once lauded as four golden flowers for their success in entrance examination for postgraduate students. Scholarships and student subsidies are established to reward students. In 2010, than two thousand students have accepted scholarship and prize, this disbursement was more than three million RMB.

Teaching Faculty: Through various ways such as introducing talents and cultivating its own members, Hankou University has set up a full-time faculty which has an advantage in terms of academic standards, titles, education experience, and age structure. There are more than 600 full-time teachers, of whom around 250 are associate professors and the above, accounting for 38.5% of the total, teachers with masters degree and the above reach around 350, accounting for 53.6%, and there are two academicians and three experts who enjoy the State Council Special Allowance. In the recent five years, the teachers of Hankou University have published 98 academic books and textbooks, completed 32 research projects covering the spectrum of science, technology, arts, administration and so on, and won more than 150 awards from the municipal level and the above. 

Schooling Condition:Hankou University holds educational instruments and equipment valued at more than 50 million RMB, and owns 73 specialized laboratories, among which there are 32 key laboratories covering the spectrum of visual communication, embedded system, international settlements, digital audio gathering and so on. These labs have the ability to offer 1750 experiments, accounting for more than 95% of the required. There also have 10 language labs of 724 seats, 56 multi-media classroom with 10,290 seats, and more than 2,000 advanced computers, through which education resources are shared with renowned universities at home and abroad. Its all-purpose music building contains 148 rooms, which are equipped with 115 pianos. The library with floorage of 26,800 sq.m holds 1,103,600 books, electronic books taking up 5,200 GB, and more than 1,500 types of periodicals. In addition, Hankou University has established 70 fixed practice bases, where the students perform well.  

International Exchange:Hankou University actively conducts cooperation and exchanges with foreign universities such as New York University, Technical University of Berlin, Chungwoon University in South Korea, Chicago Branch of University of Illinois, Versailles National Conservatory of Music, and University of Birmingham. Moreover, Hankou University collaborates with them to cultivate bachelors and masters (“2+2”, “2+3”). Hankou University also employs foreign experts and scholars to deliver lectures, and subsidizes teachers to visit its partner universities for further study or academic exchange, which helps to improve academic standards of its faculty.

Campus Culture:Hankou University values students’ comprehensive quality education greatly. It holds a variety of campus activities, for example, culture festival, science and technology festival, sports festival and arts festival, and other events, which help to improve the overall quality of its students. A number of prominent groups emerged from these activities, some of which have been awarded prizes nationally and even internationally. Its Sunrise Choir won the highest award Special Award and two gold awards in Jiva International Chorus Festival, which broke the record of Chinese choirs. As the only test unit for the Party construction of provincial independent institutions and for the construction of Chinese Communist Youth League nationwide, Hankou University, honored the medal of achievement for national patriotic education, has been granted “The Top Ten National Independent Institutions” and “The Ten Famous Independent Institutions in China” by Chinese Education Federation and Chinese Brand Names a journal of the Xinhua News Agency.

Leaders of Party and government at all levels pay great attention and give assistance to the construction and development of the university as well. They are Chinese premier Wen Jiaobao, member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China Yu Zhengsheng, secretary of a provincial Party committee of Hubei Province Li Hongzhong, provincial head of Hubei United Front Work Department of CPC Su Xiaoyun, executive vice governor of Hubei provincial government Li Xiansheng and vice-governor of Hubei provincial government Guo Shenglian. Besides, others leaders also pay several inspection visits to the university.

Under the developmental trend of popularizing and internationalizing higher education, Hankou University seeks to continue carrying on the tradition of running a school, innovating educational patterns, persisting in running the university according to law, and improving scientific and standardized management as well as the quality and effectiveness of education.
